Magi follows a young man from Spanish Harlem, G, as he ventures into a journey that forces him to question his purpose. This new experimental short film from Nathaniel De La Rosa (aka Bodega Bamz) & Ethan Felizzari -- is a story about the consequences of one's actions and asks the question:
"Do we really make our own choices... or is our fate decided?"
What happens when you combine theatre & film? "Magi" happens.
"Magi" will not be shot like a typical short film. This film instead will choose a style near and dear to the writer's hearts -- theatre & live performance. That's right. We will be shooting our film as it is performed LIVE. This experimental piece will have the look & feel of a short film all while being performed in a state-of-the-art theatrical venue. Sounds crazy -- we know.
Our reasoning behind choosing this style of film was because we wanted to show the world and the film industry that sometimes impactful film about the Urban-lifestyle, starring and written by minorities, can be created in more ways than just one. We are hoping this also shows that you do not need millions of dollars to create a world as large as the one we are creating in "Magi".
Magi is a film highly influenced by the culture of urban communities. From the texture to the wardrobe to the language, our film fully encapsulates a look that many are familiar with, but do not often see in film. At its core – Magi is a story about actions and more importantly, the consequences of one’s actions. The film itself primarily takes place within one car ride. Throughout the trip, our characters do what people do during long journeys– they talk, a lot. We hear about their own hardships and dreaming when circumstances are not ideal. We see first-hand issues behind mental health and domestic abuse. These character even dive into conversations regarding societal issues within their own community – but in their own special way.
When you leave our film, our goal is that you start a very real conversation. A conversation about one’s choices, about our characters or even about the themes of the film. We are hoping that people can relate to this project. We hope people can laugh along with our characters. We hope we can inspire a whole generation of filmmakers, creatives and people in communities who do not often see genuine representation of themself. We hope – and we know – Magi can make an impact.
DIVERSITY WITHIN OUR CREWS
We take pride in the fact that most projects produced by CK Films are led by Latinx, Black, Brown or female creatives. We hope to continue to diversify our producers & directors by welcoming new opportunities in 2022. With Magi, CK Films pledges to start a new initiative in order to employ the people who typically struggle to find jobs in the film industry; women and minorities. We are requiring that our set consists of the following:
50% of our total crew will be women or non-binary folk.
75% of our entire crew will be minorities or people of color
EQUAL PAY
Although our film is entirely independent, we pride ourselves in not settling for a small budget and unfair pay for our crews. Which is why, for this project, we are attempting to pay competitive union rates to all of our crew (non-union or not). Historically, minorities & women make significantly less in the film industry -- so our project will work to end that inequity.
WHY OUR FILM?
WHY YOU?
We believe that this project cannot be made without you -- our community of friends, family, supporters and even strangers. We wrote this for YOU -- nuestra gente. We want YOU to be represented in this and by supporting, you are doing just that.
WHY THIS?
"Magi" shows the story of Latin & minority people in the hood in a way many have never seen it. We feel as though "Magi" can inspire a whole generation and impact any of the people who watch it.
WHY NOW?
Representation matters -- now more than ever. This film can provide so much of that representation in so many fields in a time where our country is beyond divided. Showing our culture and our people on screen and having the storytellers behind the camera be reflective of our story is something that should not happen tomorrow... it needs to happen NOW.
OUR TEAM.
